Casino war is one of the simplest casino games to play. The game originates from a card game played by kids called War. And like the rest of the less complex games, Casino War has a relatively high house edge.

The game is played in a purposely built table similar to Blackjack, and up to a seven players can play at a time. A standard six decks of card decks is used. Each card is ranked according to its numerical face value, the ace being the highest card and two is the lowest. The suit of the cards has no significance in the game.

The game goes this way. First the dealer deals one card to each player in a clockwise direction starting from the player in his left, and a card to himself. The cards dealt to the players are then compared to the dealer's card, and whichever card has the highest value wins. For example, say you play in the game and you are dealt a nine and the dealer is dealt a Jack. So you lose the game. The dealer will take your bet and your card and a new deal starts again.

In case of Tie, that is, when both the player and the dealer is dealt a card with the same numerical value, the player has two options to make:

* The player may surrender his card, which means that he automatically loses half of his bet and a new deal starts again.

* The player may "go to war", which means that the player must place an additional bet equal to his original bet, and a card will be dealt to both the player and the dealer hand.

When a player goes to war, the dealer first burns three cards before he deals a card to both the player and the dealer hand. If the player's card is ranked higher than or the same as the dealer's, then the player wins an amount equal to the size of the original bet. If the dealer's card is ranked higher than the player's, the player loses both the original bet and the "going to war" bet. For example, say you bet one unit in your hand and you "go to war". So you have to put up another one unit bet. You have now two units of bet in the table. If you win, you win only one unit, but if you lose, you lose two units.

A lot of gamblers are asking where the casino gets its advantage in Casino War. While it is true that the players' winning chance is 50% since the winning bet is paid 1 is to 1, but the 1 is to 1 payoff becomes untrue in case of a tie. The truth is it is in Tie where the casino gets its edge. Remember that in Tie, the player either surrenders, or "go to war". When a player surrenders, he automatically loses half of his bet, which gives the casino close to 4% edge on the bet, and when a player goes to war, he only wins one unit in his two unit bet. Overall, the house edge in Casino War is close to 3%, making it one of the casino's sucker games, and like the rest of the sucker games, Casino War should also be avoided.
